Fort Pierre Chouteau
Just north of Fort Pierre on SD Highway 1806 is another National Historic Landmark: Fort Pierre Chouteau, the busiest 19th-century trading post in the upper Great Plains. Wildlife, native tribes, and European traders, trappers, and settlers moved in large numbers along the Missouri River, and Fort Chouteau became the center of commerce and the dominant European settlement for the entire region. Early explorer and artist George Catlin wrote:

"This fort, being in the center of the great Lakota country, draws from all quarters an immense and almost incredible number of buffalo robes, which are carried to New York and other eastern markets and sold at a great profit."

At times the fort was surrounded by hundreds of tipis. Excavations at the site have unearthed the original foundations, and a wealth of artifacts.
