As Mayor it is my pleasure to welcome you to “Historic Fort Pierre.”
We claim Fort Pierre as the oldest continuous white settlement in South Dakota dating
back to 1817. Some of the historic events include the Verendrye Brothers claiming
the area for France in 1743 (buried lead plate discovered in 1914); Lewis &
Clark encounter with the Teton Sioux at the mouth of the Bad River in 1804; Fort
Pierre Choteau fur trading post 1832 (where Fort Pierre gets its name); and the
base for western supply routes to Deadwood & Western South Dakota.
Fort Pierre is currently a growing, thriving City that has great fishing, hunting
& river recreational opportunities including 50 miles of recreational trails
in addition to high performance residential & commercial development opportunities.
I welcome you to our community & invite you to check out our many attractions
& opportunities. Enjoy your stay with us!
