B-3 ALDERMEN

B-3-1 PURPOSE

The purpose of this chapter is to describe the governing body of the City of Fort Pierre, qualification and succession of its members, and appointments made thereby.

B-3-2 ALDERMEN

Legislative powers of the City of Fort Pierre shall be vested in six (6) aldermen, who shall comprise the Fort Pierre City Council.

B-3-3 QUALIFICATION AND SUCCESSION OF ALDERMEN

A. An alderman of the City of Fort Pierre shall be a citizen of the United States and must be a registered voter residing in the ward in which he is elected.

B. Aldermen shall serve staggered two (2) year terms of office.

C. If an alderman of the City of Fort Pierre is disabled or for any reason is unable to act in that capacity for a term in excess of sixty (60) days, the Mayor may propose another qualified individual to act in place of the disabled alderman to serve out the remaining term, who shall be appointed by the Council.

B-3-4 APPOINTMENTS BY THE CITY COUNCIL

At the first regular meeting in May of each year, the Mayor shall recommend the appointment for City Attorney, Finance Officer, Chief of Police, Director of Public Works, and such other officers as needed, subject to confirmation by the City Council.
