C-2 POLICE DEPARTMENT
C-2-1 PURPOSE
The purpose of this chapter is to describe the organization, powers, and duties of the Fort Pierre Police Department relating to the enforcement of laws and the protection of the citizens of the City of Fort Pierre.

C-2-2 POLICE FORCE
The police force of the City of Fort Pierre shall consist of the Chief of Police and such patrolmen as the Mayor may appoint, subject to the approval of the City Council. In case of declared and documented emergency, the Mayor may appoint extra policemen or call upon any resident of the City to assist in establishing or maintaining order.

C-2-3 APPOINTMENT
The Chief of Police and the patrolmen shall hold office until a resignation is submitted and accepted by the Mayor and Council or until terminated for cause in accordance with established personnel policies.

C-2-4 UNIFORM
Each police officer while on duty shall wear the official uniform of the Fort Pierre police force. Clearly designated police vehicles shall be used in the routine conduct of police business.

C-2-5 DUTIES
It shall be the duty of the police force of the City of Fort Pierre and each officer thereof to enforce all provisions of these ordinances, and to preserve the peace and general order within the territorial jurisdiction of the city of Fort Pierre at all times, by such lawful means as the officer determines are reasonable and necessary.

C-2-6 IMPERSONATION
Except as provided for in SDCL ch. 23A-3, it is unlawful for any person not duly authorized to exercise the duty conferred by ordinance upon policemen of this city to wear a policeman’s badge or represent himself as being a policeman of the City of Fort Pierre.

C-2-7 AUTHORITY FOR JOINT POWER AGENCY
Pursuant to state statute, the City of Fort Pierre, when necessary, may enter into a joint powers agreement with other law enforcement agencies to provide for police protection. Where such joint powers agreement is entered, the provisions of C-2-1 through C-2-5, inclusive, shall be considered suspended during the term of any such contract.
